What is pinkeye?

Pinkeye, also referred to as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. The thin, transparent tissue that covers the white of the eye and borders the inside of the eyelid is called the conjunctiva.

It frequently occurs to kids. Although it can be quite contagious and spread quickly through daycare facilities and schools, it is rarely serious. If you catch it early and take care of it, there is very little chance that it may harm your vision. Pinkeye clears up without causing any lasting issues as long as you take the necessary precautions to stop its spread and follow your doctor's recommendations.

Pinkeye: What causes it?

There are a number of potential causes, including:

• Viruses, such as the kind responsible for the common cold

• Bacteria,

• Reactive substances like pool chlorine, smoke, grime, and shampoos

• A reaction with eye drops

• An allergic response to substances like smoke, dust, or pollen. Or it can be brought on by a specific allergy that contact lens wearers are susceptible to.

• Parasites, amoebas, and fungi

There are situations when a sexually transmitted disease causes conjunctivitis. An uncommon but serious form of bacterial conjunctivitis can be brought on by gonorrhea. If you don't treat it, you risk losing your vision. Adults who have chlamydia may get conjunctivitis. You can give your child pinkeye through the birth canal if you have chlamydia, gonorrhea, or other germs in your body at the time of delivery.

If your child has pink eye, it’s a good idea to keep them out of school for at least 24 hours after they start eye treatment to keep them from transmitting pink eye to others
